As humanity continues to experience chaos and uncertainty, we are waking up to new realities. Our beliefs are up for questioning and re-examining, and those of us who choose to be awake are seeking deeper truths. What is the truth of who we really are, and are we willing to expand that definition to embrace our connection to all life forms? Animism is the belief that spirit exists in non-human entities such as animals, plants, natural phenomena, geographic features and even everyday objects, as well as in humans; that every natural thing in the universe has a soul. Does that divine spark reside in all life forms?
One of our team members, Kristen Boyes, has a strong connection to Mother Earth and to all living things that emerge from the “womb of our mother.” She shares three stories that beautifully illustrate this profound connection for her. “A friend and I were going to do a drumming journey together on my lawn under a grove of trees. I usually use a drumming recording I have on my cell phone, but I realized my phone battery was almost dead. We decided to just go ahead and meditate. As we settled in to our quiet time, to our amazement, a rhythmic drumming began; the source in a tree directly above us. A pileated woodpecker with a bright red crest and long black beak drummed rata-tat-tat, rata-tat-tat, rata-tat-tat for the next 15 minutes, and we were able to journey. Was this a mere happenstance, or as I experienced it, a divine manifestation, a gift from spirit?”
“Later in the afternoon, a second gift arrived. I was trimming a honeysuckle vine by our back door, feeling quite intoxicated by the fragrance, and watching hummingbirds flitting from one blossom to the next. I began to wonder what it would be like to be a hummingbird. In that next moment, a miracle occurred and I became the blossom. The tiny, luminescent hummingbird landed on my glove. I felt pollinated by love and in that moment, we connected.”
“Over the spring and early summer, I have been visited by barred owls. During this time, I was healing from a serious fall, and seeking a deeper meaning for my injury. Over a one week period, the owls came every night at 10:00 and hooted their messages for an hour outside my window. For me, owl medicine is about bringing wisdom, understanding and ancient knowledge to our dreams, to see what lies within the darkness of our soul; the mystery within. The owl’s message was clear to me to keep seeking that truth within. There is a deep resonance with my soul when they speak to me.”
“The woodpecker, hummingbird and owl were gifts to me from the Divine. The experiences with the spirit of these beings reminded me that separation is an illusion, and when I am awake and fully present in the moment, I am aware of the beauty, divinity and connection that surround me.”
Kristen’s poignant moments with these nature spirits are a powerful reminder that we are not separate from nature; we are nature. When we are willing to stop the busyness of our lives and listen deeply, to wake up even for just a few moments, then we can sense the connection of all things, and we can hear the Divine voices of the animals, the plants, the trees, the insects speaking to us of the deeper Truths of who we are.
